8 simple steps to the perfect shave

When it comes to shaving, there's a simple process to perfectly silky smooth legs. Take it from an expert.

Don't stress. Like wearing makeup or following fashion trends, shaving is a personal decision and trusting your instincts is the best way to go. Many women feel that shaving gives an added boost of confidence, while feeling fresh and feminine.

Most women come to me with the same problem – after you shave your legs, your skin gets all dry, itchy and not very pretty. Don’t worry; it doesn’t have to be that way. Your legs could be perfectly smooth, and beautiful, after shaving.

Follow my 8 easy steps to get the perfect shave for perfectly smooth silky legs giving you that light as a feather feeling you are always looking for.

Step 1: Cleansing

I always start with a warm shower. Warm water actually makes your hairs softer make sure it’s not too hot so you won’t irritate the skin, so they are easier to shave. This will help to open up the hair follicles and allow each strand to soften. Moisturized legs will also help the shaving cream go on smoothly and evenly. Begin your treatment by lightly massaging a cleansing body balm into the skin on the leg area. 

Step 2: Exfoliating

The whole process should start with you giving your legs a good peeling treatment before you shave them. You can do this with a special scrub. I love using a homemade exfoliating scrub, such as brown sugar and honey mixed with olive oil.  Massage into your skin softly, using circular motion then rinse off. This will leave your skin feeling super soft and silky.

This should be done for two reasons. First, the peeling will remove all the dead skin from your legs, which will make them smoother. Second, it will release most of the ingrown hair.

Step 3: Use Special Shave Creams

Most of us shave our legs with the same shower gel we shower with. Although there’s nothing wrong with this practice, if you’re looking for really smooth legs, it’s better to buy special moisturizing shave creams.

Prep your skin with a light layer of Pre-Shave Conditioner. I’ve tried a lot of these and I personally find Gillette Satin Care Shave Gel Sensitive Skin with Aloe Vera to be the best one. It really keeps even the most sensitive skin supple and soft while getting a comfortable, close shave. Wait a few minutes after applying to let it settle on the skin’s surface.

Apply shaving lotion to the fronts, backs, and sides of both legs. You don’t need inches of thick shaving cream to do a good job. In fact, a half inch layer should be more than enough. Shave gel also helps you keep track of where you’ve shaved to avoid missing any spots.

Step 4- Invest in a Good Razor

Your personality and your beauty routine are some factors that can help you decide the best women’s razor for you. Most important thing is to invest in a quality razor. I personally like using the Gillette Venus ProSkin Sensitive for three main reasons.

Step 5: Shaving & Don’t Rush

Wet your razor in warm water  and place your index finger on the finger rest and grip the handle firmly, holding the razor at a slight angle above your skin. Press lightly and let the blades do their work.

Shave opposite the direction of hair growth For maximum comfort, use a light touch and shave in the direction of hair growth to shorten hairs and then against the grain to get the closest results.

Pay special attention to your ankles and knees. These regions are the easiest to nick, and no one wants red scars after every shaving. After shaving a few strokes, wet the razor under running water or shake it clean in a cup of warm water to remove buildup of hair and cream. *It is never advisable to move the blade sideways across your skin. This will cause painful nicks and cuts.

Step 6: Pat Dry

 Once you have shaved both legs thoroughly, run your hands over your legs to feel for any roughness or you have missed a spot. Pat your legs dry with a towel. Do not rub hard, as this will irritate freshly shaved skin.

Step 7: Moisturize

In order to get a perfect shave and have beautiful smooth legs, your shaving has to end with applying moisturizer. No excuses about this one. You can choose to buy special after shaving moisturizers. I love using Shea butter. It is great for dry itchy skin, and it gives me smooth skin too.

Apply lotion to your legs in smooth, circular motions, and let air dry.

Step 8: Get dressed

Wear your shorts, skirts, dresses and bathing suits with the utmost confidence!
