Pretty coastal villages for relaxing by day and a wealth of restaurants and clubs by night make this Greek island popular with holiday makers of all tastes.
When to go
September and October offer plenty of warm sun but without the summer holiday crowds. At peak summer season the population of this small island swells several times over, but the tourism industry has developed accordingly, to ensure everyone has a good time.
The town of Hora (also called Mykonos) is a pretty place for strolling around and sightseeing with its little alleyways, white-washed buildings and distinctive windmills. If you’re curious about the island’s past, there are lots of pretty museums and churches to explore.
Ano Mera, about 8km from Hora, is more typical of local life on the island, but also the place for a more peaceful and cultural break. You can visit the monastery of Paleokastro and tour the remains of its castle, and there are plenty of gorgeous beaches nearby, too.
What to do
Life on Mykonos starts in the afternoon. The nightlife lasts until dawn, with live music ringing out from restaurants. Most holidaymakers tend to lounge all day on the beach and do a little shopping if they have the energy!
Others make the more of the azure waters and take advantage of the watersports on offer, such as diving or snorkeling, or even try their hand at windsailing. Paradise Beach has been a seaside retreat for decades and today it’s at the heart of the island’s lively night-time scene.
Shopping and dining
Hora isn’t short of designer boutiques and interesting little places to browse for gifts, jewellery and souvenirs themed around the island’s emblem – the pelican. Hora’s waterfront, Little Venice, is a great place to see the sun setting and stop for a dinner, with lots of great seafood restaurants to choose from.
Where to stay
There is a wide range of hotels, from cheap and simple places to lay your head to gorgeous spa retreats, and you’ll find that even down to earth two-star options are often clean and welcoming. If you’re travelling with family or friends, you will also find lots of great apartments to choose from.
